Nutritionists are aware of the type of food that every individual requires depending on the type of occupation that one is in. In general, outdoor workers have a high demand of energy as compared to those that work in door especially in offices. Therefore, their diet should consist mainly of carbohydrate. The eating habits are determined by factors such as age, gender and the health status of an individual. They also make follow up on their patients and generate plans to enable them achieve their nutritional goals so as to live good and healthy lives.

Nutritionists must be treated like other types of physicians such as gynaecologists and dentists. This means that a person must visit them regularly just like they do with other physicians. Strict adherence to the feeding guideline provided by a nutritionist is very important. This is because it can save one from untimely death since some feeding habits are outright wrong if not unhealthy. Not to mention that a person can be bed ridden forever as a result of poor diets. Heath issues like obesity makes the body prone to certain diseases such as stroke.

In nutritional medicine, there are other subspecialties that one can venture in. For example there are sports nutritionists who deal with the regulation of the diet of sportsmen and women. This is meant to improve performance in sports as poor performance can often result in the end of a career in sports. It is the responsibility of the nutritionists to caution the athletes against consumption of certain foods such as alcohol.

The experts create awareness on the consequences of bad eating habits. The nutritionists develop a picture in the mind of their patients on habits like overeating or starving oneself while under medication. Nutritionists can also refer the patient to a psychologist as some bad eating habits are caused by stress. Thus, a psychologist is more qualified to dealing with such patients.

Part of the job of nutritionists is to get suitable eating plans for people in the society. They conduct research, analyze and select diets for a group of people such as mothers, the old, and infants. They put their focus mostly on nursing mothers for a while and create a suitable diet for them. When dealing with mothers, they have to consider factors like age of the mother, natural or caesarean birth, prevailing weather, and health of the mother.

As a nutritionist, one is expected to have a good understanding of all eating disorders and their prevention. This creates a good basis when dealing with a patient as some diseases have similar features and may lead to wrong diagnosis. It is recommended to consult a nutritionist before changing diet.
