Some Facts Concerning Breast Augmentation Michigan Residents Will Find Helpful

By Janet West

Cosmetic surgery is a field that has continued to grow in leaps and bounds in Southfield. Mammoplasty or breast augmentation is one of the operations that are conducted frequently. The demand for this type of operation appears to be growing tremendously over time. The main driving factor for this is the effect of the media. If they wish to have breast augmentation Michigan patients need to learn a number of things on the procedure.

There are a number of other indications of mammoplasty apart from the cosmetic reasons. Abnormally small breasts may be seen in some cases of developmental disorders. This is referred to as mammary hypoplasia. It is corrected by increasing the amount of tissue with the breasts or inserting prosthesis. The other reason as to why the same may be needed is effecting a sex change (when a feminine appearance is desired).

The prosthesis that are used for the procedure are of two main types. The first type consists of a rubber shell and a gel made of silicon within it. The silicone gel gives this type a more natural feel which makes it the more preferred option. The second is also made of a rubber shell but is filled with saline. This type is more malleable hence can allow for the use of smaller incisions during placement.

In preparing for the operation, there are a number of things that have to be done. Undergoing a physical examination and having some blood tests help in risk assessment. The presence of liver or renal disease or bleeding disorders may mean that the procedure be delayed until such conditions have been managed. If one is a smoker or if they are on drugs that may affect coagulation, they are advised to stop them for about two weeks before and after the surgery.

General anesthesia is typically used since this surgery is classified as a major operation. With general anesthesia, you will remain unconscious until the operation is completed. The surgeon will make an incision below or above the breast depending on your presence and then create a small pocket into which the implant will be placed. The wound will then be closed using sutures and dressed.

The possible complications fall under two broad categories; those that relate to the operation in general and those related to the implant. Surgical complications may include bleeding, infections and injury to nerves. Those that are related to the implant include leakage, displacement of the implant, creasing and scar tissue formation. Generally, these complications are rare especially in the hands of a skilled surgeon.

Recovery occurs within a few days. You will be discharged home on pain relievers and antibiotics to be used for one or two weeks. The general recommendation is that strenuous exercises should be avoided especially in the immediate post-operative period to allow the wound to heal well. The handling of breasts should also be done with caution.

The results of breast augmentation vary from one client to another due to a number of factors. Such will include, for instance, the type and severity of the problem, the skill of your surgeon, the client age and the presence or absence of complications after surgery. Remember that with time, the shape will change due to the pulling effect of gravity and a second operation may be needed for restoration.
