Employing Lavender Oil For Perioral Skin Condition

Lavender oil for perioral dermatitis can be an effective treatment. This skin condition is characterized by a red rash appearing around the mouth or eyes. The rash usually produces a burning sensation and may itch as well. Though not particularly dangerous, its psychological effects can be quite severe.

The discoloration of the skin on the face can be embarrassing for many of those afflicted. It is most frequently contracted by young women and children which may be the product of cosmetics with a moisture barrier. Children may be affected because of frequent sunscreen use. Exposure to UV light, friction from rubbing or the wind may exacerbate the problem.

Though the cause is not known with scientific certainty, it may be caused by hormonal changes caused by menstruation or oral contraceptives. Certain kinds of bacteria and fungi have also been found in cultures taken from infected patients.

The medical community generally treats the condition with antibiotics. Lavender oil, which may have some antibiotic and analgesic properties can be used to treat it. Apply a preparation containing the essential oil to the affected area.

The flowers of the Lavandula genus of plants are the source for this helpful oil. It is created by a distillation process where steam is used to break down the plant matter. The resulting material is then separated through a process of hydro-diffusion in a cooling chamber.The oil is siphoned off and bottled for resale. Traditionally, this oil was used in perfume. More recently, however, it's medicinal value has been recognized. In addition to the benefits previously mentioned, the oil is used in aromatherapy because of its calming effects. Most of the world's lavender oil is now produced in Bulgaria, though it has come from the Himalayas in the past.

As a mild pain reliever and antiseptic, this oil is great for such skin ailments as perioral dermatitis. It can also be used for sunburn or to relieve joint or muscle pain. This essential oil works great as a mosquito repellent as well.

In short, the essential oil of lavender is an effective alternative to pharmaceuticals in the treatment of perioral dermatitis. More serious conditions may require the assistance of a medical professional. However, lavender oil may help to soothe the burning of PD and kill the germs that cause the irruption of papules associated with the condition.
