Factors To Consider When Using Calendula For Perioral Dermatitis

By: Stacey Leach

Many sufferers have started to use calendula for perioral dermatitis treatment, usually as a complement to more conventional forms of medication. This form of dermatitis is one to which adult women appear especially susceptible. The condition is marked by a skin inflammation, usually around the mouth, which is often mistaken for acne.

A sufferer will usually experience a burning sensation on the skin around their mouth. Bumps may also appear which are filled with pus. This rash may occur on other parts of the face, such as around the nose and forehead, where is may be mistaken for acne.

The affected areas may also itch although this is not especially common. A doctor or nurse can usually diagnose the condition by examining the skin. Conventional treatments include the prescription of chemical ointments, with typical active ingredients including Sodium Sulfacetamide with sulfur, Clindamycin, Benzoyl peroxide and Tacrolimus, among other chemicals.

Some doctors may also prescribe oral antibiotics to be taken in conjunction with other treatments. Riding a patient of the condition can take many weeks and even months of treatment. Steroids are never used to treat it as face creams containing them have been identified as a possible cause of the condition.

Sunscreens and moisturizers are often used in tandem with more specific treatments to help alleviate a sufferer's symptoms. Some other studies have suggested that using toothpaste with additional added fluoride or chemicals designed to battle tartar can also be an aggravating factor in the onset of this kind of dermatitis. Herbal remedies such as calendula are often used to complement the treatment process, helping reduce the amount of time it takes.

Calendula has antibacterial and anti-fungal qualities, meaning that applying it to affected areas may well be efficacious. An agent which promotes healing, it also acts as a moisturizer and may also help with the prevention of scarring. It is also considered very safe to use, having no known safety issues when interacting with more conventional drugs.

That still means that some caution should still inform any decision when thinking about using calendula for perioral dermatitis. Different people can have different reactions to substances. For this reason, it always bests to consult a properly qualified medical practitioner before embarking on any kind of treatment for the condition.
